Safety
Is this dangerous?
As event organizers, safety is our number one concern. Like all sports, swimming has some risks. Open water swimming is strenuous, but no more so than swimming in a pool.
What safety precautions have been taken?
In order to receive sanctioning from the various athletic organizations, our safety plans are reviewed numerous times. Members of the North Oldham Fire Department will have personnel in the water and on land. Numerous kayakers will be in the water ready to assist swimmers. Lifeguards and spotters will be on the shoreline ready to help. Take a look at the pictures from previous races. I'm sure you will see the numerous watercraft ready to help. If at any time, the safety personnel feel the swim is getting unsafe, they have the ability to call for the water to be cleared. At no time are swimmers more than 40 yards from shore.
